Publications/Writings
Over the years I have published a half dozen sermons, several articles/papers and one book (1997.) Much of this work is out of print but copies of my book, thank goodness, are still available ( Caring Beyond Words; Google it if interested.) The last journal article I published was based on my research project during my days in pastoral psychoanalytic psychotherapy training. I have written a previous blog post about that project. It explored how pastoral psychotherapists felt about their own personal therapy. My one and only published book is about the interface of psychology and spirituality, and the effect of symbols on the unconscious. In the Ministry world there are three related professions that have to do with the integration of spirituality and psychology. They are: Spiritual Direction, Pastoral Counseling and Pastoral Psychotherapy. There are key similarities and key differences in all three. I have been interested in all three, but my interest after I left the Pastorate became Pastoral Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy......Since becoming a psychoanalytic therapist I have written two national/regional newsletter articles. One in the Newsletter of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and the other in the Journal of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. I have of course written regular articles over the years in our Valley Pastoral Counseling Center Newsletter. But most of my publishing of late ( 2021) has been self publishing on my Blog, "Plain Words from an Old Psychoanalytic Therapist." To date (2025) I have 113 posts! They reflect all my major interests including: family genealogy, human evolution, human development, psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy, neuropsychoanalysis, family stories, psychoanalysis of religion, and my own personal and professional story, journey etc. If you are reading this post then you have discovered my Blog!.... My other unpublished writings of late consist of five training manuals of my notes, charts, etc., that I have used in supervising pastors, pastoral psychotherapists, psychoanalytic therapists, and neuropsychoanalytically informed therapists. The most complete one is the last one entitled, "An Introduction to Neuropsychoanalytic Psychotherapy." It is my so far unpublished book that I use to train other therapists interested in neuropsychoanalysis. I have learned over the years that in addition to doing my work I enjoy teaching others how to do it as well. And for me that teaching often takes the form of writing. I just cannot quit!!
