Jesus: My First Therapist Model
It seems like I have been writing about a number of Jewish Psychoanalysts. Now I want to talk about the first Jew who in my upbringing in the Christian Church, had the most significant on my life--Jesus of Nazareth. Outside of my Father, older brother and an uncle figure who lived next door, Jesus was the model I was raised to emulate. This learning about the man Jesus began in my early formative years of childhood, at home, at church, and in the Southern culture in which I was raised. So my first therapeutic model was the model of unconditional love. Regardless of how much we try, no therapist/analyst can ever love a patient perfectly. But it is interesting that it was in seminary that the writings of Carl Rogers introduced me to the term "unconditional positive regard" as the attitude the therapist should have toward the client. So today I am aware of how much of an early model Jesus was for me as a therapist who seeks to care for my patients with unconditional positive regard. I will next share some examples of how Jesus related to those he was seeking to help. Please ask questions or make comments. Dialogue is welcome.
