Freud Working

Here ( from a picture displayed in the Austria Museum)is the creator of psychoanalysis himself, seated behind his patient , holding his lit cigar. What was he doing back there while his patient lay prone before him revealing her deepest and darkest secrets? He was listening. It is called analytic listening and it is attuned to what the patient says, thinks, feels, as well as what she avoids, disguises, and runs away from. All this data , verbal and non verbal, coming from the patient, and the attentive listening by the analyst, leads to the analyst and patient hearing the voice of the unconscious mind speaking from the depths of the patient's soul. As this voice gets clearer and clearer the analyst shares what he hears with the patient and sees how the patient responds. This is called analytic interpretation. When it works the patient learns something about herself that she had never known before. A new piece of self knowledge that she can now use to live a healthier life.
