25 years of Involvement in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
At the end of my words about about pastoral psychoanalytic psychotherapy I shared that I had l lived in that world before the world of psychoanalysis. I thought it might be helpful now to write about the psychoanalytic world. Of course everyone knows that psychoanalysis was created by Sigmund Freud around 1900 with his book, The Interpretation of Dreams. What you may not know about Freud is that he was a medical doctor, a neurologist, who became one of the earliest psychologists and originated the psychotherapeutic treatment of 5 times a week, laying on a couch, for about 5 years, ie psychoanalysis. Freud was also a professor at the University of Vienna, Austria. Kathy and I made a trip to Vienna to see the Freud Museum which is a transformation both of his home and his work office and famous couch( though they have moved his couch to the London Freud museum because he fled there escaping the Nazis who invaded Austria. ) Freud trained and mentored the first psychoanalysts who followed him including Carl Jung, Alfred Adler, and Otto Rank. ( If you have not seen the movie about Freud and Jung, The Dangerous Method, check it out. And if you have not seen the off Broadway play about Freud and an imaginary meeting with CS Lewis, The Final Session, see it as well. ) I will continue with Freud next time.
